Category: accessible Devices
I live in a large city, but for some reason get exceptionally lousy radio reception. I was just wondering if there were portable satellite radios that were accessible for the totally blind. Thank you.
i don't think so, at least not yet
Actually yes, if you get sirius satellite radio, and buy the staletto, it anounces the name of every channel as you go over them. It is done with a turn wheel, but since it anounces them all, it isn't too difficult. also, the buttons are simple. the only part you can't do on your own is put in security passwords for hooking up to wireless internet connections, other than that, its perfectly useable. You won't be able to use every single function of it, but for listening to the radio, it works fine. I use it myself.
I use XM, and although the chanel names aren't accessible with speech, it still works fine, and is really easy to use. Most any radio has a learning curve, but if you can operate a home stereo, you can use any of the satilite radios out there. Also, XM has come out with an radio called the sky doc, which you basically attach an iPod Touch or iPhone to, and use its controls to control the radio. Not sure of the accessibility of the ap for this system, but for Touch or iPhone users, it could very well be a solution.
I'm also looking for satelite radio info. Which is better, in your opinion, sirius or xm? Anyone also know of any accessible hd radios that work well?
I guess it wouldn't matter any more. The two company's merged.
